What is a doula?

Doulas support individuals and families on their journeys of fertility, conception, pregnancy, birth, the postnatal period and in parenthood, by providing information, advocacy, and offering practical and emotional support during this huge rite of passage in your life.

There is good evidence that doula support improves the experience and birthing outcomes for both the woman or birthing person and the baby.

Doulas do not advise, but provide informational support to enable you to make informed decisions about your maternity care. Doulas support different kinds of births and different parenting choices. They do not take a clinical role but work alongside midwives and doctors.

Read my read my blog post ‘why I became a doula’ to understand how I came to be a doula.

Having Naomi as our doula for our second baby was a profoundly transformational experience for both myself and my partner.

Naomi brings an impressive abundance of experience, knowledge, tools, techniques and trainings to her role as a doula. Naomi brought her deep intuition, wisdom, strength and calmness to always know how to offer the right support and guidance in the right moment, in particular when I didn’t know how to feel into what I needed or where I was at during my pregnancy and whilst giving birth.

Naomi supported me to feel deeply empowered, trusting and connected with myself, my pregnancy and birth of my second baby, and to understand my journey as a sacred rite of passage. I had not anticipated the incredible new depths of experience, learning and self discovery I would go through, and I have Naomi to thank as my doula for opening these doors for me and being my guide.”

More About One-Off Doula Sessions

I can work with you and your birth partner (if you have one), to help you prepare for birth, either in person in your home or online, tailoring each session to your specific needs and desires.

Pre-birth I can support you in understanding the anatomy and physiology of birth, in helping you identify and talk through your fears and concerns (exploring this through writing and art if helpful), writing up a birth preferences document in preparation for the birth, practising simple breathing and movement techniques to support you in the birth process, as well as being a sounding board for any other part of birth/ parenthood preparation you need support around.

I have a large library of pregnancy, birth and parenthood related books which you can have access to. I also offer pregnancy shiatsu massage and use birth art, ceremony and ritual,as inspired by Pam England’s ‘Birthing From Within’ and ‘Ancient Map for Modern Birth’,to help you prepare for the rites of passage of birth and parenthood.

Sessions are usually around 2 hours long

“One to one sessions with Naomi were the pregnancy gift to myself I didn’t know I needed! Each session was enriched with a range of tools,  from a colourful toolbox, including books, image, audios, drawings and a wealth of personal and professional experience.

We were able to tailor sessions according to themes and issues most relevant to what was pressing for me at that time. At the same time, Naomi brought up important milestones to each session that could benefit our process. I went on to have a beautiful and empowered birth experience with my first child.”

I can offer you and/ or your partner support both in-person and on-line to feel more emotionally and practically empowered as you navigate the twists and turns of your conception and fertility journey, whether conceiving naturally or through assisted means, including IVF.

Sessions are tailored to meet you and your specific support needs in this moment.

Working both with evidence-based, practical information and ancient wisdom, meditation, ritual and ceremony to help reframe your experience into one of agency, whatever the outcome.

In your session/s with me, we can:

  • Gently uncover your fears and potential triggers at this time, identifying ways to soften or overcome these. For example, we can explore the medicalised language or processes that may be a part of your conception journey, and identify empowering alternative language/ utilise reframing techniques that can recentre your experience in love, connection and empowerment.
  • Identify areas of your life that can be enhanced to support your overall health and fertility.
  • Discover ancient understandings of Andean Conscious Conception and rituals to support you in connecting to your conception journey, including a guided journey to connect with the realm of Spirit Babies.
  • Explore practical tips and exercises and guided meditations for connecting with and cleansing the womb and for overall womb health.

My work in supporting you through your conception journey has been deeply influenced by my training with Pam England at the Birth Story Medicine School and with Peruvian Holistic & traditional midwife, Cynthia Ingar, who shares much wisdom around conception, pregnancy and birth from Ancient Andean wisdom.

Sessions are usually around 2 hours long.

“The conception session with Naomi was incredibly nourishing. It helped me find my strength and agency within the IVF process – prompting me to consider elements of it I hadn’t even thought to think about. This gave me so much more confidence going into it, and  transformed what could have been a wholly sterile medical procedure into a loving, playful and deeply connected time. But more than that, it connected me to a bigger picture of conception and wellness that’s reverberated around all areas of my life. I’m so grateful to have had Naomi walking alongside me at this time.”

I can  create a bespoke prenatal or postnatal ritual or ceremony for you and your family, honouring all that the body has done to bring life into the world, welcoming in this new chapter and human for your whole family and marking this moment of change with a moment of stillness and honouring. Previous ceremonies have included holding a mother blessing ritual, a ‘crossing the threshold’ ritual for couples and families before birth,  ‘Closing The Bones’ massage and wrapping ceremony, and walking a sand labyrinth on the beach with the whole family.

Ceremonies are usually around 2 hours long

“In addition to supporting us throughout the pregnancy, birth and early days, a few weeks after the birth of our baby, Naomi also held a beautiful (process/ritual/space/session) with my partner and I to process the birth, acknowledge the transformation and evolution that had happened in our family, and to welcome and honour this new life into our lives.”

Dee, Adam, Fiadh and baby Oran, 2023

I can come to your house to help you after the birth. I offer breastfeeding support (I am a trained breastfeeding peer supporter), placenta processing support, and can just generally help you around the house (cooking, cleaning, looking after other children, etc), e.g. holding your baby so you can wash or eat, or even sleep! We can also have a ‘Birth Debriefing’ to help you process and write down your birth story.

Sessions are around 2 hours long.

‘Inviting Naomi into our home to support us in this tender time was worth every penny. She held the baby when I needed a shower, she cooked nourishing food for us, she cleaned the house, and she offered us the widsoms and nuggets that we as new parents really needed in learning how to care for a new baby. It really eased us into parenting our baby with confidence and helped us care for ourselves too. Thank you Naomi!’

It is not just stories you heard in childhood that influence your expectations, decisions, and peace of mind when it comes to birth, but also the countless fragments of raw, emotionally-charged birth stories you have heard from friends and strangers. Unfortunately, unexamined fears and beliefs may prevent you from being prepared to meet the unexpected realities that can emerge in childbirth. In addition, being unprepared can predispose to self-judgement, blame, and emotional shock.

By proactively seeking an Prenatal Birth Story Medicine session, you can change how you are already writing the story.

In your session (either in-person or online), you may want to . . .

  • Explore family birth beliefs and stories that are limiting for you
  • Go on a guided guided journey to reframe and tame your fears
  • Get down-to-earth preparation to meet the uncertainty and intensity of birth
  • Heal a broken heart, or shattered dream from a previous birth

I am trained as a Birth Story Processing specialist to deliver this process by the Birth Story Medicine School.

Each session is around 1.5 hours in length and includes a follow up email or phone call to help integrate the learning/ reframing process.

“Our session has actually had quite a profound effect on me and I found lots of grief and tears coming up in the days after which was really good to release after so long. Our session helped me to finally get time to do a ritual for myself this Sunday and it was absolutely perfect. I did some smudging, journaling, drawing, drumming, and had a long look at my body and vagina in the mirror. I found it very healing and calming to just take in my body as it is now and thank it for all that it has done and is still doing as a mother. Thanks so much for the session and your support. I feel that this has really helped me prepare for my next birth with a bit more clarity and understanding.”

“I was recommended to do a Birth Story Medicine session with Naomi by a friend. I had held onto lots of emotions with regards to my birth which was ten years ago now, and I kept these feelings under the so-called ‘carpet’. Since our session, I have noticed that how I parent my daughter is different and I have now formed healthy boundaries with her,  which I was struggling with at the time, because I almost felt guilty for how she arrived into the world. I am feeling lasting impacts from our work together! I now talk freely and openly about my birth experienc. I still feel sometimes it’s hard but generally it’s so much easier for me than it was. I can now actually look back and think why did I not seek more help”
